When Would Partial Dentures Be Recommended by a Dentist?
When people think of dentures, many of us picture a full set of artificial teeth that replace either the entire upper row or entire lower row of teeth. But did you know that there’s such a thing as partial dentures? Here are some of the reasons why a dentist would suggest you get partial dentures.
Some Teeth Are Remaining
While full dentures are used when there are no natural teeth left, or when any natural teeth left need to be removed, that’s not the case with partial dentures. Partial dentures actually work when there are still some teeth there. This is because the framework of the dentures is such that it latches or clasps onto those remaining teeth to be held in place. Full dentures stay secure by suction, special adhesive, or even implants.
You’re Still Missing Multiple Teeth
These days, there are many options for getting missing teeth replaced. If you have just one tooth missing, then a dental implant or a dental bridge can do the trick. But if you have multiple missing teeth, especially ones that aren’t located next to each other, it may be the easiest, more affordable option to go with partial dentures. As mentioned before though, there still needs to be a healthy tooth left near those spaces to secure the denture.
Not a Candidate for Dental Implants
Another reason why a dentist might recommend that someone get partial dentures is if they’re not a candidate for dental implants. Maybe they don’t have enough jawbone structure left for the treatment to be successful. Maybe they simply don’t want to pay for dental implants, as it is a more expensive option than dentures. Whatever the case, partial dentures are a good alternative.
