Our office is equipped to provide a full menu of dental services for young ages, including cleanings, sealants, fluoride treatments and fillings. We never dismiss the value of educating kids about their oral health during their visits. Our dentist takes time with each child to explain upcoming dental procedures and help them create healthy dental habits at home. We always use non-threatening language with your child, and we work hard to help them establish a positive association with going to the dentist.

How often should my child see a pediatric dentist?

Tooth decay and gum disease don’t discriminate, so we recommend that every patient visit our office at least twice per year for regular cleanings and exams, including children. Some parents believe that because their child’s baby teeth will be lost that it’s not important to take care of them, but that is not true. Taking care of your child’s teeth and gums from a young age can really help their overall oral health in the future. We also find that kids that are taken to the dentist regularly tend to grow up to be adults that visit the dentist regularly as well.

How can parents help prevent tooth decay?

Parents should help their children brush their teeth until they are about six years old, but once a child is old enough to brush their own teeth, it’s important to still make sure that they are brushing properly and maintaining a thorough twice-daily oral care routine. We also recommend utilizing some of our preventive treatments as well, like dental sealants and fluoride treatments. Dental sealants are clear coatings that cover the molars to prevent bacteria from building up in hard to clean spaces. Fluoride treatments help strengthen tooth enamel which helps fight off cavities, and can even reverse early signs of tooth decay.

What should I do if my child has a toothache?

If your child has been complaining about tooth pain, you will want to make an appointment with our team as soon as possible. In the meantime, there are a few things that can relieve their discomfort. Taking child-safe pain medication can offer immediate relief, and gently holding a cold compress to the cheek can help numb the pain as well. We also recommend swishing with a warm salt water rinse, as that can help disinfect the area and reduce inflammation and tenderness. If the pain gets to the point where it is unbearable, please give our office a call so we can prepare a treatment room for your emergency visit.

We Love Your Kids!

In one convenient place, we can treat your entire family. Three Creek Dentistry even offers family block appointments and Saturday hours if that suits your schedule best. During your visit, your child can play video games, listen to music or watch their favorite Netflix cartoon. If your child is particularly anxious about going to the dentist, please let us know. We can offer sedation dentistry or take additional measures to put kids at ease. Overall, we show kids that taking care of their smile can be pleasant, and even fun!
