Earth-Friendly Dental Tips
Earth Day is April 22, and in honor of this increasingly popular holiday, we decided to curate a list of ways in which you can stay eco-friendly while still taking care of your teeth. Believe it or not, there are some simple tweaks that can truly make a difference! Conserve the resources on Earth while maintaining a healthy smile with these tips:
Earth Day Dental Tips
- Turn Off the Faucet
- Buy Eco-Friendly Dental Products
- Recycle
This is one of the easiest but most overlooked ways to be eco-friendly while brushing your teeth. As you probably know, it’s recommended that you brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day. However, after you apply toothpaste to your brush, there’s no need to keep the water running during those two minutes of brushing. You only need it to rinse, so be sure to turn off the faucet while brushing. Yes, something so simple can have a big effect. Depending upon how long you brush your teeth for and how often you do so, you can save up to 200 gallons of water a month. Over a span of one year, that equates to about 400 hot tubs!
While out shopping for dental care products, look a little more closely at the label. Buy dental products made of recyclable or biodegradable materials. You can also buy items made of natural materials, such as bamboo and silk.
Be on the lookout for programs that recycle old dental products. Sometimes they can be used to create cool things, like playgrounds! So when it’s time to replace your toothbrush, don’t just throw it away. Call up your local recycling facility and find out if they, or somebody else, can recycle it upon your behalf. Do the same for old dental floss containers and toothpaste tubes. But to make the process simpler, start collecting them somewhere in your house instead of recycling just one product. Then, after a few months, hand these over to the recycling facility.
